Prius Earns First 5-Star Rating in Uber-German EcoTest

The Toyota Prius has just undergone the new EcoTest from Germany’s ADAC (equivalent of AAA but with more authority). The car is the first ever to score a perfect 5 out of 5 stars in the test, out of 56 vehicles that have been tested thus far.

The EcoTest that is administered by ADAC is based on fuel economy and emissions. Toyota’s Prius earned 40 points in the fuel economy portion by acheiving  4.58l/100km or 51.36 mpg. The Prius’ low emissions earned a score of 50, combining for a total of 90 points.

The test now includes the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP cycle), that is based on the predicted, future world cycle that will measure fuel consumption. This added some new parameters to the testing procedures, which kept all of the other vehicles out of the 5-star category.

For the first time in these tests, the air-conditioning system was left on during the ADAC highway and NDEC cycles. The tests also take into account the emissions produced from the production of the vehicle, as well as the emissions used to transport the fuel the car uses.
