Year’s Eve programming. And there will be a prominent presence on the home pages
of many popular websites, including MSN Canada, Huffington Post Canada, AOL.ca,

of the Toyota brand, so New Year's Eve is the perfect time for us to unveil the
vehicle and launch our TV campaign,” said Warren Orton, Director, Toyota Canada.

exterior and more refined interior – all matched by a more engaging driving
experience.”

Car thieves not hot on Toyota Prius hybrids
The Toyota Prius hybrid, while popular with
car buyers looking to save money on fuel, isn't at all popular with car
thieves, according to a U.S. report.
The Prius is much less likely to be stolen than other cars of a similar age, according to a U.S. National Insurance Crime Bureau report released November 21.
That's likely because the Prius is a one-model car with parts that can't be swapped out with other vehicles, NICB spokesperson Frank Scafidi told Bloomberg.
Model year 2008 to 2010 Prius hybrids saw a theft rate in the U.S. of just one in 606 over the first six months of 2012. The average for vehicles of that age was one in 78.
Stolen Prius hybrids were also recovered about 96.7 percent of the time.
Scafidi says he expects the theft and recovery numbers to fall more in line with the average as the model ages or becomes even more popular.

The Car That Put Hybrids on the Map
The second generation 2004-09 Toyota Prius is the car that really put
hybrid vehicles on the map, paving the way for today’s “family” of Prius
automobiles.
Worldwide, Prius sales climbed from 125,700 in 2004 to 404,200 in 2009. It was offered in only one body style, then – a four-door hatchback with seating for five. The second generation Prius with Toyota’s Hybrid Synergy Drive was more fuel efficient than the first, with even cleaner tailpipe emissions. In 2006, Prius got a mild facelift with a revised grille and new taillights. A new third generation Prius went on sale as a 2010 model.
Consumer Reports rates Prius reliability as much better than average. In fact, in making the 2007 Prius a “Recommended” pick, the magazine said “reliability is outstanding.” The 2004-09 Prius was consistently the most fuel efficient vehicle sold in Canada. The International Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) gave all second generation Prius models its best rating of “good” in front impact crash tests. Prius was voted North American Car of the Year in 2004 and European Car of the Year in 2005. In 2007, the Swiss government named Prius the world’s greenest car, and it was J.D. Power & Associates’ Most Dependable Compact Car in 2008 and 2009.
Although they sold well in Canada, the used car market is not flooded with second gen Prius models, indicating that happy owners keep these cars for a long time. Perhaps the best bet when shopping for a Prius of this vintage is to buy one from a dealership which offers the peace of mind of Toyota Canada’s Certified Used Hybrid program. You get 12-month/ 20,000 km powertrain coverage, the balance of the 8-year/ 160,000 km hybrid components warranty, 12 months of roadside assistance, a 134-point Quality Assurance Inspection and a CarProof vehicle history report.

Toyota tops Consumer Reports survey
DETROIT—And the winner is ... Japan.
Japanese brands took seven of the top 10 spots in Consumer Reports’ annual reliability rankings, pushing aside their U.S. and European rivals. Toyota Motor Co.’s Scion, Lexus and Toyota brands took the top three spots and the Toyota Prius C, a subcompact hybrid, got the best overall score. Mazda, Subaru and Honda were close behind.
The rankings, released Monday, predict the reliability of 2013 model-year vehicles based on surveys of Consumer Reports’ readers. This year, 800,000 people submitted information on 1.2 million vehicles from the 2010 to 2012 model years. The rankings are critical for auto companies, since Americans frequently cite Consumer Reports as a main source of car-buying advice.
Ford and Lincoln, once top performers, plummeted to the bottom of this year’s rankings because of persistent problems with glitchy touch screens and bumpy transmissions. Ford was also hurt because three normally reliable models — the Ford Escape, Ford Fusion and Lincoln MKZ — are all new for 2013, so Consumer Reports couldn’t predict their reliability.
Also near the bottom were Chrysler Group’s Chrysler, Dodge and Ram brands, which have been getting a fast makeover since partnering with Italy’s Fiat three years ago. Consumer Reports says models with more features and more powerful engines, like the V-8 versions of the Chrysler 300 and Jeep Grand Cherokee — had the most issues.
The best-performing U.S. brand was Cadillac, from General Motors Co.
Volkswagen AG’s luxury Audi brand made the biggest strides in this year’s survey, climbing 18 spots to No. 8. It was the best-performing European brand. Glitch-free new models like the A7 sedan got high marks from Jake Fisher, Consumer Reports’ director of automotive testing.
“They’re out-BMWing BMW, easily, in terms of the driving dynamics,” he said.
Electric cars also got impressive results. The all-electric Nissan Leaf was Nissan’s best performer, partly because its electric motor has fewer parts than a gasoline engine, Fisher said. But the Chevrolet Volt — an extended-range electric car that has both an electric system and a conventional engine and transmission — also got the highest score of any GM vehicle.
“GM took a lot of painstaking time to develop that car,” Fisher said.
The Volt was recalled earlier this year because vehicles crash-tested by the government showed a risk of fire when coolant leaked from the battery. But Consumer Reports’ rankings don’t reflect that, since the magazine only asks respondents to note issues that have happened on their own vehicles. Only vehicles with 100 or more responses are included. Among 2012 models, the magazine got the most responses for the Honda CR-V, with nearly 3,000.
Fisher said the magazine is getting about the same number of complaints as it did five years ago. But issues with electronics, audio and touch-screen systems have increased while complaints about mechanical problems are down.

Fun to drive, epic reliability and surprising in-cabin spaciousness: The 2013 Toyota Yaris Hatchback is everything a subcompact should be
(TORONTO, ON – October 23, 2012) The Toyota Yaris Hatchback proves that big ideas come in small packages.
“Toyota engineers combined sharp, edgy styling, agile handling and
ample interior room in the Yaris Hatchback – the subcompact that offers
epic Toyota value in a fun to drive, easy to own package,” noted Tony
Wearing, Senior Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc. “With one 3-door
and two 5-door models, excellent fuel efficiency and safety, room for
five or up to 286 litres of cargo capacity, plus a host of class-up
features, there are many ways to love the 2013 Toyota Yaris Hatchback.”
With a curb weight of less than 1,050 kg and a 106 peak horsepower
1.5 litre four-cylinder, the Yaris Hatchback is responsive and
efficient. Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i), Sequential
Multiport Electronic Fuel Injection and other engine systems maximize
performance and minimize fuel use. Choose a five-speed manual for
impressive fuel efficiency of just 6.0 L / 100 KM city/highway combined.
Or opt for the convenience of the available four-speed automatic Super
ECT with overdrive and an ECO Indicator on the instrument cluster, for a
fuel efficiency rating of just 6.2 L / 100 KM city/highway combined.
Responsive and efficient electric power steering, a turning radius
of just 9.4 meters, and European-tuned suspension featuring front
stabilizer bar and rear torsion beam geometry make the Yaris Hatchback a
nimble city car while remaining stable and easy driving on the highway.
Safety is always standard on a Toyota, and the Yaris Hatchback is
best-in-class with nine airbags (dual-stage driver and front passenger,
front seat mounted side, front seat cushion, front and rear side curtain
and driver’s knee) plus anchor points for child seats and – on five
door models – child protector rear door locks. As with every new Toyota
since 2011, the 2013 Yaris Hatchback is also standard equipped with the
six active safety technologies of the Star Safety System: Antilock Brake
System, Brake Assist, Electronic Brake Force Distribution, Vehicle
Stability Control, Traction Control and Smart Stop Technology work
together to help drivers avoid potential accident situations.

Prius bestselling vehicle line in California
LOS ANGELES — Toyota’s Prius hybrid passed Honda’s Civic and Accord
to become the bestselling vehicle line this year in California as higher
gasoline prices drove up demand for fuel-efficient cars.
Toyota, the world’s largest seller of gasoline-electric autos, sold 46,380 Prius models to Golden State drivers in the first nine months of the year, the California New Car Dealers Association said in its Auto Outlook report. That vaulted the Prius three levels above last year, when it ranked behind the Civic, Accord and Toyota’s own Camry.
Recovering car and light-truck sales in California, the nation’s largest auto market, are lifting industry-wide sales across the U.S. Registrations through September are up 26 per cent in California, exceeding the 14.5 per cent increase for U.S. light-vehicle sales, according to the report.
“Gas prices are up 80 cents per gallon in California over the national average,” said Alec Gutierrez, senior market analyst for Kelley Blue Book in Irvine, Calif. “That’s really driving up the appeal of hybrids, as well as plug-in vehicles in California.”
Drivers in the state bought 1.25 million new cars and trucks this year through September, according to the report. That would be 11 per cent of the U.S. total of 10.9 million. Purchases of Prius models this year in California account for 25 per cent of the 183,340 Prius liftbacks, plug-ins, v wagons and c subcompacts sold in the United States.
Ford’s F-Series pickup trucks are the top-selling vehicle line across the U.S. this year, followed by Camry, according to researcher Autodata Corp. Nationally, Prius is only the 12th bestseller among all vehicle types this year, and seventh by sales volume among car models, according to Autodata figures.
The hybrid, first sold in Japan 1997, hasn’t previously led sales in the state, based on California Auto Outlook reports back through 2006.
Disruptions at California refineries since August pushed gasoline in the state to a record $4.67 a gallon on Oct. 9, according to AAA. While prices in the state have eased, the fuel averaged $4.55 a gallon on Oct. 17, compared with a national average of $3.74, based on data from the largest U.S. motorists’ group.
“Prius is going to stay strong through 2012, and into 2013,” Gutierrez said. “We’re going to get some relief at the pump, but not that much.”
U.S. Prius sales, already at a record this year, may total as many as 230,000, Toyota U.S. Group Vice-President Bill Fay said this month. Honda’s CR-V is California’s bestselling light truck this year, according to the report, prepared by Experian Group Ltd.’s AutoCount unit.
In Japan, Toyota has sold 260,947 units of the Prius this year, and the model is poised to be the nation’s bestselling vehicle for a fourth consecutive year, according to the Japan Automobile Dealers Association.

Toyota Tundra Makes History Towing Space Icon
TORONTO (Oct. 15, 2012) – A Toyota Tundra half-ton pickup truck without any special modifications successfully towed the 150,000 pound space shuttle Endeavour across a bridge spanning the America’s busiest freeway on Friday night, Oct. 12. The tow was a result of a 20-year partnership between Toyota and the California Science Center to raise awareness of the space program and continue public education through exhibits and events.
The shuttle’s 19 kilometer route over city streets to its new home at the California Science Center includes one passage over the 405 Freeway. The Tundra assisted in the transport of the Endeavour as it journeyed over the Manchester Boulevard Bridge—an area that required a lighter tow mechanism than other portions of the route for weight distribution purposes. Toyota did extensive testing and worked with the Sarens Group, a heavy lifting and engineering transport company, to develop a dolly to move the Endeavour over the bridge.
The model selected was a stock 2012 Tundra CrewMax 4x4 with Toyota’s 5.7-liter iForce V8, producing 381 horsepower. All Tundra trucks are produced exclusively at Toyota Motor Manufacturing, Texas in San Antonio. The truck used to tow the Endeavour was purchased from a Southern California Toyota dealer, with no modifications or special equipment added for the tow.
The Tundra was piloted by longtime Toyota professional driver Matt McBride. Riding along was Garrett Reisman, one of the astronauts aboard the orbiter when it traveled to the International Space Station in 2008. From start to finish, it took 5 minutes to cross the bridge.
“I’m honored to be part of the space shuttle Endeavour’s final mission to the California Science Center,” said Garrett Reisman, an engineer and former NASA astronaut. “I appreciate Toyota’s support in helping bring this space icon home to the Southern California community.”
The Science Center has a popular working exhibit utilizing a Tundra that demonstrates the physics of leverage. The Tundra used to tow the shuttle will replace the existing truck when the Endeavour exhibit opens on Oct. 30, 2012.

Here are a couple of their stories:
· “The integration of electric vehicle operation, which switches seamlessly to full hybrid mode as needed, is what attracts me most to the Prius Plug-in Hybrid,” noted Autoshare President Kevin McLaughlin. “This results in less range anxiety while offering optimum fuel efficiency and supports the next generation of car sharing – the use of plug-in hybrid vehicles and green energy sources to further reduce society’s carbon emissions.”
· “I have been driving a second generation Prius for four years, and as a university professor I had the chance to test the Prius Plug-in Hybrid in 2010,” said Maxime Dubois. “There is a unique feeling associated with a pure EV run, while the availability of the gasoline engine for higher power and longer distance journeys gives one the feeling of driving a highly optimized vehicle, where every bit of energy is used for the right purpose.
Fast Facts on the 2012 Prius Plug-in
The 2012 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid delivers the future of the automobile, and it’s now available through Toyota Dealerships across Canada. The Prius Plug-in Hybrid inspires confidence like no other plug-in. That’s because the Prius Plug-in and its third generation Hybrid Synergy Drive technology – already proven in more than four million vehicles around the globe – was extensively tested in Canada, undergoing more than two years of real-world field trials as part of a global testing program. Feedback from these trials helped Toyota engineers optimize the Prius Plug-in’s driving and ownership experience.
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid features room for five adults and up to 443 litres of luggage space. With a powerful but lightweight lithium-ion battery pack, the Prius Plug-in Hybrid is ready to go with a full charge in as little as 90 minutes when connected to a 220v dedicated socket or 3 hours when connected to a 110v dedicated 15 amp socket – and automatically switches to its full hybrid gasoline-electric system once the electric power is depleted so there’s never any worry about arriving at your destination.
The Prius Plug-in Hybrid offers impressive efficiency of just 2.0 Le / 100 KM† (city/highway combined) when taking advantage of its Electric Vehicle (EV) capabilities. And the Prius Plug-in Hybrid’s Electric Vehicle range – up to 25 KM in city driving – means typical Canadian commuter ranges can be made without using a drop of gas. The Prius Plug-in is also capable of driving on electric power alone (or EV mode) up to 100 kilometres per hour. The 2012 Prius Plug-in is available through dealers across Canada.

From the “we didn’t see this coming” department, a 2012 Toyota Tundra
CrewMax truck will tow the 300,000-pound space shuttle Endeavour the
last leg to its permanent home at the California Science Center in Los
Angeles. The 2012 Tundra will transport the historic vessel the last
quarter mile of its trip when the event takes place on October 13 of
this year. To prepare for such a project, Toyota worked with The Sarens
Group, a heavy lifting and transport company, to develop a custom
heavy-duty dolly.
Toyota claims the 2012 Toyota Tundra used for the stunt is an unmodified CrewMax model with a 381-hp
5.7-liter V-8 under the hood. The truck’s maximum sustained towing
capacity is 10,000 pounds. This isn’t the first time Toyota and the
California Science Center have worked together. Toyota has had a
partnership with the Science Center, and currently has a Tundra on
display at the museum as part of an exhibit demonstrating the physics of
leverage. That truck will be replaced by the one towing the Endeavour
when the Endeavour exhibit opens on October 30.
For more information on the Tundra Endeavour project, head to
Toyota.com/TundraEndeavour after September 17. When the Toyota Tundra
arrived for the 2008 model year, we named it the Motor Trend truck of the year but would never have guessed it might one day tow a space shuttle, even for just a quarter mile.
Prius Plug-in Hybrid Bests Volt, Leaf in First Six Months of Sales
After six full months on the market, the Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybrid has sold 6,061 units, outpacing the first six months of sales for the Chevrolet Volt and Nissan Leaf.
Given that the Prius already had quite the following before its plug-in hybrid model hit the market, it’s no surprise that Toyota’s first six months of sales were significantly better than the Volt’s 2,745 and the Leaf’s 3,875. Keep in mind that those are the first six months of each respective car’s totals, and not the same six-month period that Toyota was selling its Prius Plug-in Hybrid model.
The Volt has since recovered, but the Leaf has continued to stumble. Regardless, buyer data has shown that consumers choose the Prius Plug-in over the Volt and Leaf because of its fuel economy, which helps dispel range anxiety of pure electric vehicles. Though that logic applies more to the Leaf than the Volt.
The Prius Plug-in is rated at 95 MPGe with a full charge taking 2.5 to 3 hours using a standard 120-volt household outlet. A 240-volt charging station can fully charge the Plug-in in 1.5 hours.
“When I pre-ordered the Prius Plug-in, I was wondering (and hoping) if it would do my 15-mile commute in all-electric EV mode. To my pleasant surprise, I have found that I can do it with 2 – 2-1/2 miles of EV range to spare. Even with the A/C on, I make it home with a mile or more left. Of course, terrain, speed limits, climate and driving style have something to do with that,” said Prius Plug-in Hybrid owner Paul Kenyan.

Ford Falsely Claims Toyota Corolla’s ‘Best Seller’ Title
While last week Ford claimed that the Focus was the best selling car this year to date, it is now apparent that this isn’t actually true.
Ford's claim was that 522,000 Focuses sold worldwide through the first seven months of the year. Toyota immediately answered by saying that through those same seven months, it had moved 722,000 Corolla’s.
When notified of the difference, Ford admitted to making a mistake, and said that the number it wanted to release was actually for six months of sales. In the first six months of 2012, Ford claims that it sold 489,616 Focus’ while Toyota only moved 462,187 Corolla’s. Again, Toyota answered with a new sales number of 603,840 units sold.
Toyota says that not all of the Corolla variants were accounted for in the sales numbers, as worldwide, the Corolla sells as the Matrix, Corolla Fielder and Corolla Rumion. All the sales numbers used by Ford come from the IHS, who did not account for these other Corolla variants.
Still, even if an apples to apples comparison was conducted, Toyota claims that just the Corolla sedan and Auris hatchback, two body styles also offered by the Focus, sold 524,000 units in the first six months of this year, still beating out the Focus.
The IHS’ numbers only encompass 90 percent of Toyota worldwide sales, another factor cited by the company that contributed to Ford’s misleading numbers.

Toyota launches Canada’s first Certified Used Hybrid Vehicle program
Drivers have purchased more than 69,000 Toyota Hybrid Vehicles since the first Prius arrived in Canada in 2000.
Now, responding to customer demand for the most proven hybrid models in the country, Toyota has expanded its popular Certified Used Vehicle program with a special program designed to enable Canadians to buy previously-owned hybrid models with maximum confidence.
“The Toyota Certified Used Hybrid Vehicle program is the first of its kind in Canada, and is a testament to Toyota’s industry-leading experience in building, selling and servicing Canada’s best selection of fuel-efficient, low-emissions, advanced technology vehicles,” said Tony Wearing, senior managing Director, Toyota Canada, in a statement.
“Hybrids are as reliable, and as easy to own and drive, as conventional vehicles –- so it’s natural to build on our program for certified pre-owned vehicles with this new initiative tailored to those built around Toyota’s proven hybrid technology. Add in the ability to view Toyota Dealer hybrid inventories online plus special financing rates, and it’s never been easier to shop for the right hybrid vehicle.”
Every Toyota Certified Used Vehicle includes a Car Proof report, a rigorous 127-point inspection, and extensive mechanical and appearance reconditioning. Certified vehicles also include a seven-day/1,500-km exchange privilege, a free oil/filter change, membership in Club Toyota, a minimum of 12 months/20,000 kms powertrain warranty and roadside assistance coverage.
Like every Toyota Certified used vehicle, Toyota certified used hybrid vehicles undergo a thorough inspection. A special 134-point inspection plan includes all hybrid components. Toyota Certified Used Hybrid Vehicles are meticulously reconditioned, then backed by Toyota’s comprehensive warranty. This is honoured at more than 1,400 Toyota dealers in Canada and the United States, and includes Toyota’s eight-year/160,000-km warranty on all hybrid components.

Prius Earns First 5-Star Rating in Uber-German EcoTest
The Toyota Prius
has just undergone the new EcoTest from Germany’s ADAC (equivalent of
AAA but with more authority). The car is the first ever to score a
perfect 5 out of 5 stars in the test, out of 56 vehicles that have been
tested thus far.
The EcoTest that is administered by ADAC is based on fuel economy and emissions. Toyota’s Prius earned 40 points in the fuel economy portion by acheiving 4.58l/100km or 51.36 mpg. The Prius’ low emissions earned a score of 50, combining for a total of 90 points.
The test now includes the Worldwide Harmonized Light Vehicles Test Procedure (WLTP cycle), that is based on the predicted, future world cycle that will measure fuel consumption. This added some new parameters to the testing procedures, which kept all of the other vehicles out of the 5-star category.
For the first time in these tests, the air-conditioning system was left on during the ADAC highway and NDEC cycles. The tests also take into account the emissions produced from the production of the vehicle, as well as the emissions used to transport the fuel the car uses.

Camry Hybrid offers power, fuel economy, space
Toyota Canada reported a 30 per cent year-over-year sales gain in July
which included a new monthly record for Toyota trucks, the Lexus GS,
Scion, and its Prius models.
Toyota’s hybrid family made a big contribution to the segments in which
they were offered (8.4 per cent of Toyota sales with 1,183 units sold),
and accounted for 45.9 per cent of sales in the intermediate car
segment.
“Canadians are embracing new models like the Prius c, the Prius v and the next-generation Camry Hybrid — vehicles that deliver high fuel efficiency and low emissions,” said Tony Wearing, senior managing director, Toyota Canada Inc.
The topic of today’s review, the Toyota Camry Hybrid saw a 609.4 per cent increase in sales (227 units sold). That sales increase probably had much to do with the refreshed 2012 model.
Key changes for the new Camry Hybrid included a whopping 39 per cent improvement in fuel efficiency; best-in-class performance from its new 2.5L Atkinson Cycle engine; and increased cargo space thanks in part to a battery-pack size change.
Soft touches inside
The Camry’s cabin was nicely finished and I liked the look of the soft-touch plastics on the upper dash with its white cloth stitching. Those soft touches extended to the door and centre console armrests, to the upper door trim, and to the knee pads on either side of the console.
That soft area on the console added to driver comfort as did the Camry's plush and supportive fabric seats. There was no adjustable lumbar support, but the support was there and I would have no concerns on long trips. I liked the three-tone colour of the front seats which had manual fore/aft, height, and seatback recline (no height adjust for the passenger). The front seatbacks reclined all the way back onto the rear seat cushion.
Both front doors had storage cubbies and room for tall bottles, while entry into the Camry was made easier by keyless entry, where I could leave the keyfob in my pocket.
Exclusive to the Camry Hybrid was its ‘Metallic-tech Grain’ trim; it combined with the black dashboard, brushed-aluminum highlights, and the ivory seat fabrics on part of the cushion and seatbacks.
Also unique to the hybrid was its three-gauge instrument cluster with an analog fuel economy gauge, plus a power-flow display which graphically showed the vehicle's energy flow, cruising range, and real-time fuel economy. Three small LCD displays positioned in each of the gauges showed all sorts of vehicle info., like outside temperature, odometer, average speed, Eco drive level, fuel economy, and more.
The stack area offered large, easy-to-use buttons and dials for audio and HVAC. In fact, I really liked the simple functionality, especially for the climate control. Like most days throughout this awesome summer, it was hot and muggy through my test period and I appreciated how quickly the Camry's AC cooled down the cabin.
A large cubby at the bottom of the stack had a push-push lid and inside there were inputs for media devices, including an iPod, and there was also a 12-volt power source. The wide console area housed the gated shifter, two cupholders, and a good-sized open tray. The big armrest bin was, well, big (for a midsize sedan; a hybrid no less).
Tall and wide folks would have no complaints seated up front.
Those same big folks would find the same room and comfort in the rear where there was loads of leg and head room. The middle seat was even half comfortable and would suffice for a slim human in the 5-11 range. There was lots of knee room for me back there seated behind a pushed-back driver's seat and my feat also had plenty of room to wiggle under the front seat.
Entry and exit to the rear were easy tasks and folks older than myself would probably feel the same. I appreciated the room for two drinks in each rear door along with the two cupholders in the fold-down armrest.
Olivia’s booster seat fit very well and she had no problem at all buckling herself in, even with the armrest down and full of kid drinks. The young-uns also appreciated the pouches on the seatbacks for their books and there was an open cubby on the back of the centre console for more small stuff (Davide had his Nintendo 3Ds stored there).
Assist handles (above all four doors) were there to aid the exit process. Parents will also like the easy-to-access lower tether anchors for infant seats, the three top tether strap anchors on the rear dash, and the fact that forward- or rear-facing infant seats would fit just fine.
New-found cargo room
The Camry Hybrid added more trunk space for 2012 (now at 13.1 cu.ft.) thanks to a trunk-mounted battery pack that was reduced in size along with the DC-DC converter that was moved from the trunk area to beneath the hood.
Its trunk would fit two full-size bags of golf clubs and a couple of kit bags (do golfers use kit bags?). It measured roughly 30 inches long and 51 inches wide. My tester included a handy cargo net.
I liked that the right portion of the Camry's rear seatback could fold forward with the tug of a lever in the trunk. With that seatback down a pass-through about 16 inches wide and seven inches high appeared.
Something about 90 inches long could fit in from the trunk and through that pass-through up to the front passenger seatback which was fully upright with the cushion portion forward to the max. You could slide in several 2X4X8s on a slight angle up through the front seats.
New platform
Like the rest of the Camry lineup, the hybrid version sat atop a new platform for 2012, but its length, width, height, and wheelbase remained the same.
Exterior changes included all-new sheet metal and a new chrome grille that reached upward toward a refreshed headlamp design. At the bottom of the grille was a wide air inlet winged by trapezoidal chrome fog light niches.
At the back, chrome taillight accents were cast-off and replaced by a curvier design that draped into the rear side panels and spread to the trunk.
What distinguished its exterior from the regular Camry, which I reviewed here recently, were the hybrid badges on the front panels and trunk lid, while the front and rear Toyota badges sported blue backgrounds rather than black (similar to the Prius).
My tester’s beautiful Cypress Pearl would be my choice of colour.
Power and fuel efficiency
The Camry Hybrid felt more like it had a V6 under the hood rather than an in-line four.
Its new 2.5-litre Atkinson Cycle gave the Camry more horsepower and more foot-pounds of torque, which combined for some surprisingly lively acceleration.
Throttle response was great as the Hybrid gave all its power in an instant, which was darn good for off-the-line dashes or quick highway passes.
The 2.5 four-cylinder worked with a 105-kw electric motor and a revised 245-volt battery pack which consisted of 34 nickel-metal hydride modules each with 1.2-volt cells. Combined power output was 200 hp.
The transition from gas engine to electric motor and back again was absolutely seamless, and its improved regenerative braking system was something I noticed right away as it was comparable even to the non-hybrid Camry.
Thanks to several new enhancements for 2012, the Camry's interior was hushed as very little outside noise entered on drives in the city or on the highway, while its suspension softened the asphalt nasties.
The Camry Hybrid drive system also offered both EV- and ECO-mode options.
In stealth, err, EV mode, the electric motor, powered by the hybrid battery, was used to drive the vehicle. This mode enabled me to sneak, for example, around my parking lot or garage at work while the Camry didn't make any noise nor release any gas emissions.
EV mode would shut off when the vehicle approached 40 km/hr, but you could drive distances of a few hundred metres up to two km in the right conditions. EV mode would shut off if the hybrid battery got too low or if you pressed the accelerator firmly.
In Eco mode, vehicle driving force and operation of the AC system was controlled to improve fuel efficiency (it managed the heating and cooling operations and fan speed of the AC system).
There was a ‘B’-shift option for the Camry Hybrid’s transmission which allowed for engine braking; it took the place of the conventional automatic transmission's ‘L’ setting and could be used for, say, downhill braking situations.
The big news for the new Camry Hybrid was fuel economy. Its estimated fuel economy rating was 4.5-litres/ 100km city, 4.9 highway, and 4.7 combined (we realized 5.8 after an extended 14-day test; I still had more than half a tank of fuel left before I had to top it off and return).

The end
On the whole, for those on the hunt for a mid-size sedan with proven reliability, superior fuel efficiency, ample cargo space, an affordable price, and more than enough power for everyday drives, then a trip to your local Toyota dealership for a test run in the new Camry Hybrid should not be ignored.Article by August 15, 2012 - 2:11pm Todd Gillis | Wheel Time

TOYOTA LAUNCHES CANADA'S FIRST CERTIFIED USED HYBRID VEHICLE PROGRAM.
Drivers have purchased more than 69,000 Toyota Hybrid
Vehicles since the first Prius arrived in Canada
in 2000. Now, responding to customer demand for the most proven hybrid models
in the country, Toyota has expanded
its popular Certified Used Vehicle program with a special program designed to
enable Canadians to buy previously-owned hybrid models with maximum confidence.
“The Toyota Certified Used Hybrid Vehicle
program is the first of its kind in Canada, and is a testament to Toyota’s
industry-leading experience in building, selling and servicing Canada’s best selection
of fuel-efficient, low-emissions, advanced technology vehicles,” said Tony
Wearing, Senior Managing Director, Toyota Canada Inc. “Hybrids are as reliable,
and as easy to own and drive, as conventional vehicles – so it’s natural to
build on our program for certified pre-owned vehicles with this new initiative
tailored to those built around Toyota’s proven hybrid technology. Add in the
ability to view Toyota Dealer hybrid inventories online plus special financing
rates, and it’s never been easier to shop for the right hybrid vehicle.”
Regardless
of powertrain, Toyota’s certified used vehicle programs are designed to help Canadian
drivers enjoy unrivaled piece of mind, years of ownership satisfaction, and
enhanced resale values.
Every
Toyota Certified Used Vehicle includes a CarProof Vehicle History Report, is
subject to a rigorous 127-point inspection plus extensive mechanical and
appearance reconditioning. Certified vehicles also include a seven day/1,500 km
exchange privilege, a free oil/filter change, membership in Club Toyota, a
minimum of 12 months/20,000 kms powertrain and roadside assistance coverage.
Like every
Toyota Certified used vehicle, Toyota certified
used hybrid vehicles undergo a thorough inspection. A special 134-point
inspection plan includes all hybrid components. Toyota Certified Used Hybrid
Vehicles are meticulously reconditioned, then backed by Toyota’s
comprehensive warranty. This is honoured at more than 1,400 Toyota Dealers in Canada and the United States, and includes Toyota’s eight-year/160,000 km warranty on all hybrid components.
“Toyota has sold
more hybrids than any other manufacturer and the Toyota Certified Used Hybrid
Vehicle program makes it easier than ever for Canadians to join the growing
number of drivers who enjoy the many benefits of hybrid vehicle ownership,” Mr.
Wearing concluded. “This new program is yet another example of why we have
declared 2012 The Year of the Hybrid in Canada.”

Toyota has
just announced the third group of winners in its 100 Cars for Good
Project. Thus far, 75 charitable organizations have been chosen to
receive free Toyotas to help them do their charitable work.
In March, Toyota opened the contest to entrants. From there, the field was narrowed to 500 organizations, by a team of experts in philanthropy. Five organizations are profiled on 100 cars for goodand are voted for by members of the public everyday, from May 14 until August 21st,. Each person can vote once per day and the winning organization of the day gets a free vehicle. They can select a new Tundra, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, Prius V, Sienna, or Sienna Mobility. Any nominations who do not win still get a cash grant for $1,000 from Toyota.
“As we approach the close of 100 Cars for Good, it is exciting and humbling to see how many communities and organizations Toyota touches through this program,” said Jim Lentz, president and chief executive officer of Toyota Motor Sales, U.S.A.
The majority of the third group of winners are organizations that improve society through animal welfare, health & safety, education, and services to children, adults as well as people with disabilities. Interestingly enough, half the vehicles are Siennas, plus three of the wheelchair accesible models, but only one is a Camry.

Toyota Unintended Acceleration Appeal Denied by NHTSA
Toyota was mostly cleared of wrongdoing in the unintended acceleration case thanks to a verdict from NHTSA. An Iowa senator however, recently asked for the investigation to be reopened, but NHTSA is standing by the verdict.
“We do not believe that tin whiskers are a plausible explanation for these incidents,” the agency said in a response to the letter sent by Grassley. NHTSA conducted its own independent study into the tin whiskers phenomenon, and found that it may cause a ‘jumpy’ throttle, but it did not cause the unintended acceleration in Toyota vehicles.
NHTSA also spent 10 months investigating the plague of accidents that peaked in the summer of 2009. NASA scientists and engineers led the probe and found the cause to be attributed mostly to driver error and accelerator pedals designed in such a way that they can become wedged under improperly installed floor-mats.

Second-hand cars perfect for first timers
2000-2005 Toyota Echo
But we’ve come to adore the homely Echo with its trim exterior dimensions and trick tall cabin inside. Its upright chairs provided easy access and good sightlines. The centre-mounted instrument panel was never a good idea, but owners swear you get used to it.
The Echo is propelled by a sophisticated 1.5 L DOHC four cylinder that puts out 108 welcome horsepower, thanks to 16 valves and variable valve timing, hooked up to either a five-speed gearbox or four-speed automatic transmission.
Available as a two- or four-door sedan (the hatchback arrived in 2005), the Echo may make you feel like you’re in a penalty box. The interior is as grim as a discount motel, but without the free coffee and newspapers.
Despite this, Toyota didn’t cut any corners when it came to the oily bits. Mechanically, its entry-level car was made to last — the Echo was actually assembled in Japan — and owners raved about the little car’s unshakable reliability and cheapskate operating costs.
At Peace Arch Toyota we always have a couple of great pre-owned Echo's in stock.
